National consensus on 2011


KATHMANDU, June 22

The National Census 2011 is to be conducted from June 17 to 27 next year.

 

A seminar was organised on Tuesday to discuss the effectiveness of the methodology, questionnaires and strategies selected for the census and its dissemination.

 

Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare Sarbadev Prasad Ojha inaugurated the seminar organised by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). He said the census that draws the development plans should be objective and it should present real picture of the status of infrastructure development, human resources and facilities enjoyed by the people.

 

National Planning Commission’s Vice Chairman Jagdish Chandra Pokharel urged one and all to extend cooperation for making the important campaign costing around Rs.2 billion a success.

 

Minister of State for General Administration Jeetu Gautam said enumerators should collect statistics by reaching the people’s doorsteps as census is the reflection of the actual status of the marginalized communities.

 

Minister of State for Health and Population Khadga Bahadur Basyal stressed accurate data collection during the census that reflects the real picture of the country and suggested that the Dalit community should not be left out.

 

During the programme, a draft of enumeration of households of the National Census 2011 was also presented. Some 44,000 enumerators will be mobilized during the upcoming census.

 

On the occasion, secretary at the National Planning Commission Yub Raj Pandey, CBS Director General Uttam Narayan Malla and Director Dr. Rudra Suwal informed about various aspects of the national census.

 

The first census was conducted in Nepal in 1911 AD. The first census had put Nepal’s population at 5,600,000. The nation’s population is expected to increase by five folds in the period of 100 years. Nepal’s present population growth rate is 2.2 percent. It is estimated that there are 6,000,000 households in the country.
